A medieval castle is built to defend itself: curtain walls, towers, a keep, often a moat. From the Renaissance onwards the château becomes a residence, open onto gardens, and walls lose their purpose against artillery.

A medieval castle is built for defence: a keep, curtain walls, towers, often a moat or a rock. France built them from the 10th to the 15th century, before artillery made walls vulnerable and the Renaissance turned castles into residences.
