Set on a hilltop overlooking the valley toward Fougères, the ruins of Saint-Aubin-du-Cormier castle recall one of the strongholds that once guarded the borders of the Duchy of Brittany. Built in the early 13th century on the orders of Peter I of Brittany, the fortress originally had ten towers and a massive keep before being deliberately dismantled by Charles VIII in 1490, following the Breton defeat at the Battle of Saint-Aubin-du-Cormier. Only a slice of the keep still stands today, along with traces of the two surrounding walls.
