Château de Fougères stands in Fougères (Ille-et-Vilaine), in the Bretagne region of France. Set in a bend of the Nançon river below the old town, this is one of the largest medieval fortresses in France, built and extended from the 12th to the 15th century to watch over the eastern border of the Duchy of Brittany. Three concentric walls, round and square towers, and curtain walls of granite and schist form a military complex that withstood several sieges before becoming the governors' residence. Balzac and Victor Hugo both drew on it for their novels, the Mélusine tower having inspired the Tourgue in Hugo's Ninety-Three. Several towers are open to visitors today, allowing a walk along the ramparts and through the lower chambers of the keep.
