What the French Ministry of Culture records

Seul château royal de la Renaissance conservé en Picardie, ayant gardé la quasi-intégrité de son plan et de ses volumes extérieurs. Construit vers 1530-1535 par Philibert Delorme pour servir de résidence de chasse à François Ier, le château est achevé en 1556 (pavillon de l'auditoire). Logis et offices très remaniés vers 1750-1770 (surtout les dispositions intérieures). Transformé en dépôt de mendicité en 1808, puis en maison de retraite en 1889, le château conserve néanmoins de nombreux et intéressants vestiges de son décor Renaissance sculpté par Jean Goujon (entre autres les deux escaliers de l'aile ouest des offices).
