To make a day of it

Château de Coucy stands in Coucy-le-Château-Auffrique (Aisne), in the Hauts-de-France region of France. The building is listed as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 12th century, 13th century). Adult admission costs 7 EUR. Its opening hours and prices were verified at the source on August 4, 2026.

Coucy castle is visited today as a ruin, standing on a rocky spur above the valleys of the Oise and the Ailette. Built from the 13th century onward by the powerful Coucy family, it once held what was reputed the tallest keep in the Western world, blown up by German forces in 1917 without military justification. The remains, now consolidated and subject to archaeological digs, still bear witness to a turbulent past stretching from the Fronde to the First World War.
