By period
A 13th-century stronghold and an 18th-century house are not visited the same way. The building century comes from the Mérimée database.
Middle Ages4,861 châteauxKeeps, curtain walls and fortresses raised between the 11th and 15th centuries. These are visited by climbing stairs, bring proper shoes.
Renaissance3,989 châteauxThe 16th and 17th centuries, when the fortress became a residence: ceremonial staircases, designed gardens, façades opened onto the landscape.
Classical3,309 châteauxThe houses of the 18th and 19th centuries, often still lived in, where the grounds are as much the visit as the rooms.
