In Blérancourt, in the Aisne department, the remains of a residence built in the early 17th century by architect Salomon de Brosse for the Potier de Gesvres family survived the French Revolution and two world wars to become the setting of the French American museum. Only the main gate, two corner pavilions and traces of the moat and bridge remain from the original château, the central building having been demolished after 1792. Visitors come for this fragmentary architecture, set within the gardens known as the Jardins du Nouveau Monde, and for the singular history of the American committee that came to aid devastated regions after 1917.
