What the French Ministry of Culture records

Au 12e siècle, le troubadour Bertrand de Born possédait le vicomté d'Hautefort. Il joua un rôle important dans la guerre entre Richard Coeur de Lion et Henri Court-Martel, prenant parti pour ce dernier. A la mort de Court-Martel, en 1183, un siège de huit jours aboutit à la prise du château par le roi anglais. Born put conserver sa seigneurie et rebâtit en partie la forteresse. L'édifice fut reconstruit au milieu du 17e siècle, sans doute lorsque la terre fut érigée en marquisat. Il ne reste aucune trace des constructions du 12e siècle. Quelques vestiges de maçonnerie remontent au 15e siècle. Le château forme un plan en U, calé à l'extrémité des branches par de grosses tours rondes reliées entre elles par un gros mur en maçonnerie soutenant une terrasse. Le fond de la cour est occupé par un grand corps de logis. Une aile en retour borde et domine une grande plateforme qui flanque ce château à l'est. Cet édifice est un bel exemple des demeures seigneuriales périgourdines du 17e siècle.

A ramp provides access to the château's inner courtyard, leading to the galerie d'honneur, the appartements du marquis de Hautefort, the salle des tapisseries, the chapel, the ground floor of the Tour de Bretagne, the restaurant and the shop.
