Perched on a rocky spur in the Périgord Noir, this castle overlooks the village of Hautefort and stands out for a classical architecture unusual in the Dordogne, closer to the châteaux of the Loire than to local fortresses. Largely rebuilt in the 17th century for the marquis of Hautefort, it went through a turbulent history, including a fire in 1968, before being restored and opened to visitors. Today one can see carefully reconstructed rooms, a grand staircase, a chapel, and terraced gardens with boxwood parterres surrounding the walls.
