To make a day of it

Château de Commarque stands in Les Eyzies (Dordogne), in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region of France. The building is listed as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 12th century, 14th century, 15th century). Adult admission costs 10.5 EUR. Its opening hours and prices were verified at the source on October 25, 2026.

In the Beune valley, between Les Eyzies and Sarlat, the ruins of Commarque castle stand on a rocky spur reached by a track and then a wooded path of about 600 metres. Founded around the 12th century at the request of the abbots of Sarlat, the site passed from the Knights Hospitaller of Saint John to the powerful Beynac family, who built most of the defences still visible today. Visitors can see a double keep, several towers that once served as dwellings, a chapel and the remains of an entire medieval settlement, abandoned in the 18th century and restored since its purchase in 1968.
