What the French Ministry of Culture records

La construction primitive du 12e siècle fut agrandie, modifiée et modernisée jusqu'au 15e siècle. Sa position stratégique fit jouer au château un rôle important au cours des guerres albigeoises. Simon de Montfort le prit d'assaut et le fortifia, en faisant un exemple de l'évolution de l'architecture militaire. Le donjon rectangulaire situé au point le plus fort de la position, fut successivement renforcé par divers ouvrages.
