To make a day of it

Fort du Socoa stands in Ciboure (Pyrénées-Atlantiques), in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 17th century, 18th century, 19th century). Admission is free. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

At Ciboure, at the entrance to the bay of Saint-Jean-de-Luz, the Socoa fort has guarded the harbour approach since the 17th century. Begun under Henri IV and then entirely reworked by Vauban and François Ferry from 1693 onward, it forms an enclosed coastal battery topped by a four-storey tower crowned with a machicolated platform. Decommissioned militarily in the late 19th century, it later served the customs authorities and sailing activities. Today it can only be seen from the outside.

What to know

  • The fort can only be seen from the outside, with no access to the interior of the buildings.
  • Entry is free, and there are no set opening hours since it is an exterior visit only.
  • The site has been a listed historic monument since 2009, covering all the defensive structures and surrounding public land.
  • Allow a short stop along the Socoa harbour, as the fort is mainly viewed from the shore.
