What the French Ministry of Culture records

Construit entre 1894 et 1907 (avec un agrandissement en 1960) par l'architecte biarrot Gustave Huguenin pour le baron Albert de l'Espée (1852-1918) , héritier des aciéries De Wendel, personnage atypique et misanthrope, le château d'Ilbarritz était la pièce maîtresse de tout un ensemble de constructions, s'étageant du sommet de la colline à la plage, reliées entre elles par quatre kilomètres de galeries couvertes. Le baron, qui se souciait peu de l'esthétique traditionnelle, voulait avant tout des édifices sans fioritures inutiles et fondamentalement pratiques.
