What the French Ministry of Culture records

John Pennington Mellor (1833-1908) , enrichi par le commerce du coton entre le Brésil et Liverpool, fit construire en 1880 par les architectes Ralph Selden Wornum et Edward Salomon, dans un grand parc, une vaste demeure de style anglo-normand ou Old English, au luxueux décor intérieur très éclectique et très raffiné. La construction, liée à l'engouement des Britanniques pour la côte basque au 19e siècle, fut achevée en 1884. Les meilleures fabriques d'Angleterre, de France et d'Allemagne (pour les vitraux) ont fourni leurs produits. Dépouillée de la majeure partie de son mobilier, l'édifice fut vendu en 1948 à la Caisse d'allocations familiales qui en fit en 1985 un centre d'accueil.
