In Biarritz, the château de Françon is an Anglo-Norman style mansion built between 1880 and 1884 for the British shipowner John Pennington Mellor, who had made his fortune trading cotton between Liverpool and Brazil. The building combines turrets, stained glass and bay windows with an eclectic interior, including a room decorated with peacocks and a hall with carved fireplaces. The park, once covering fifty hectares of exotic trees, still holds a Swiss chalet brought back from a world's fair.
