Château d'Abbadia stands in Hendaye (Pyrénées-Atlantiques), in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region of France. The building is listed as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: second half of the 19th century). Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
Built in Hendaye between 1864 and 1879 for Antoine d'Abbadie, explorer and astronomer, this château owes its neo-Gothic design to Viollet-le-Duc and his collaborator Duthoit. The interior is striking for its décor combining fantastical creatures, Ethiopian motifs and Basque inscriptions, reflecting the owner's travels and interests. An astronomical telescope dating from 1880 still stands in the meridian room, beyond the library that forms the heart of the building.
