What the French Ministry of Culture records
Le domaine de la Mercerie, avec son château néo-gothique datant de la fin du 19e siècle, est acquis en 1924 par les frères Réthoré, Raymond (1901-1986) et Alphonse (1905-1983). Le premier, industriel de machines à laver puis député, est également collectionneur. Avec son frère, architecte autodidacte, il projette de transformer le château en "Versailles" charentais, un pastiche de l'architecture classique entrepris dès 1939 et poursuivi entre 1947 et 1975. L'ensemble, révélateur de l'ambition mégalomane des deux frères, n'est pas achevé à la mort d'Alphonse. Une grande vente aux enchères du mobilier et des oeuvres d'art a lieu en juin 1987.
