Standing on a rocky spur between the Tude and Viveronne rivers, the Château de Chalais overlooks the small town of Chalais in the Charente region, with origins going back to the Middle Ages. Held for centuries by the Talleyrand-Périgord family, it retains a gatehouse with drawbridge, a keep and a U-shaped main building where fireplaces, wood panelling and painted beamed ceilings survive inside. The furnished rooms open to visitors trace the building's changes from the medieval period through to the 19th century.
