Château de Mauléon stands in Mauléon-Licharre (Pyrénées-Atlantiques), in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: Middle Ages). Adult admission costs 3 EUR. Standing on a hilltop above Mauléon-Licharre, the old castle occupies the site of an 11th-century earthwork fortress later rebuilt in stone. Once a residence of the viscounts of Soule and later a stake in the conflicts between the English and the French, it retains a pentagon-shaped enclosure, three corner towers and the remains of a keep torn down in the 18th century. The visit is short, taking in the courtyard, a 29-metre-deep well and the entrance to the former dungeon cells.
