What the French Ministry of Culture records

Contrôlant le gué permettant le passage de Béarn en Soule, le château est cité dès 1287. Les seigneurs de Mongaston sont connus dès le 14e siècle. Au 17e siècle, il est fait mention de nouveaux bâtiments distincts du vieux château. En 1929, un incendie détruit en grande partie l'édifice qui est l'objet de travaux de restauration depuis 1971. Sous son aspect actuel, le château doit correspondre à une adaptation du 16e siècle (fenêtres, tour d'escalier) de l'édifice du 13e-14e siècle conservé dans l'intégralité de son volume. Le corps de logis rectangulaire est flanqué d'une tourelle d'escalier hexagonale à l'angle nord-est et d'une échauguette à l'angle opposé. Le grand camp retranché (basse-cour, cour haute, fossé) avec les traces d'aménagement qu'il recèle (clôture, murs, dépendances) est indissociable du château lui-même.
