Set on a fortified mound above the Entre-deux-Mers countryside, the château de Benauge preserves the remains of one of the most powerful strongholds in the Gironde, first built as an 11th century keep and rebuilt after Henry III Plantagenet's siege in 1253. The site is laid out with two tower-reinforced enclosures, a moat, ramparts, outer yards and terraces around a keep and chapel. Owned in turn by the Grailly family and the dukes of Épernon before being turned into a stately residence in the 18th century, it still bears the marks of the Hundred Years' War in Aquitaine.
