On the banks of the Dronne river, the château de Bonnes stands on the site of a medieval stronghold that served for six centuries as the seat of a lordship tied to prominent families of the Périgord region. The building seen today dates mainly from the early 16th century, when Robert de La Marthonie, steward to King François I, added a Renaissance wing inspired by the châteaux of the Loire Valley, with its arcaded gallery and painted interiors. Altered in the 17th century and partly destroyed during the French Revolution, the château has been under restoration since 2007.
