In Barbezieux-Saint-Hilaire, this castle stands at the heart of the town, which it long protected as its principal stronghold. Most of what can be seen today dates from a rebuilding campaign around 1480, following the destruction of an earlier medieval castle during centuries of conflict. Only part of the original enclosure survives: a stretch of curtain wall with its covered watch-path, a round tower, and outbuildings that were reworked over time. The site later served, in turn, as a prison, a hospital and a theatre.
