Peyrepertuse's ruins stand on a limestone ridge in the Corbières hills, nearly 800 metres above sea level, overlooking Duilhac-sous-Peyrepertuse from a sheer drop of 30 to 40 metres. This extensive fortified complex, one of the so-called « Five Sons of Carcassonne », stretches along the rocky crest and includes two separate keeps linked by curtain walls and living quarters. Built and expanded between the 11th and 13th centuries, and held by the French crown from 1258, the site earned the nickname « heavenly Carcassonne » for its scale.
