The Château de Padern stands on a limestone outcrop above the village, overlooking the Verdouble river in the Corbières area of the Aude. Less well known than nearby Quéribus or Peyrepertuse, it went through the same turbulent period of the Albigensian Crusade before spending centuries under the authority of the Abbey of Lagrasse. Steep paths lead up to it, along the Cathar Trail that crosses the region between the Mediterranean and the Ariège.
