To make a day of it

Château comtal de Carcassonne stands in Carcassonne (Aude), in the Occitanie region of France. Adult admission costs 19 EUR. Its opening hours and prices were verified at the source on September 4, 2026.

At the heart of the medieval city of Carcassonne, the comtal castle is what remains of the feudal power of the Trencavel family, before becoming the residence of the royal seneschal and then a frontier stronghold facing the kingdom of Aragon. Visitors can trace the evolution of a 12th-century lordly residence turned into a fortress, with its Pinte tower dominating the site and its second rampart enclosing the city. Listed as a Unesco World Heritage site, its current appearance owes much to the restoration work carried out by Eugène Viollet-le-Duc in the 19th century.
