To make a day of it

Château de Bouilhonnac stands in Bouilhonnac (Aude), in the Occitanie region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: first half of the 16th century). Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

The château de Bouilhonnac has occupied a monastic site since the early 16th century, on land given to the monks of Lagrasse Abbey in the 10th century. Inscribed as a historical monument, the building consists of a fortified enclosure and chapel, both partially ruined. Three towers structure its defensive system: a circular tower at the eastern salient, with three storeys, a smaller tower near the northeast corner, and a square tower to the west.

What to know

  • The ruins include arrow slits at multiple levels and, added later, gun ports, testifying to two periods of construction or defensive modification.
  • The chapel retains a polygonal apse and windows with trilobate tracery, but the building has lost its upper sections, notably its merlons and machicolations.
  • The site was occupied by German forces in 1943-1944, who established an observation and radio post there.
