Château des Saptes stands in Conques-sur-Orbiel (Aude), in the Occitanie region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: first quarter of the 16th century). Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
The Château des Saptes, built in the early 16th century at Conques-sur-Orbiel, originated from the textile operations of the Saptes brothers, drapers who converted an old mill into a complete manufacturing facility. Flanked by three towers and a Renaissance chapel, this stone rectangle preserves its original timber frames and bears witness to an industrial organization that has since vanished: wool preparation, fulling, dyeing, and weaving. After ceasing manufacturing operations in the 18th century, the site became a rural estate, thereby preserving the structure of its buildings and the character of its interior spaces.
What to know
- The château was raised by one storey between 1663 and 1689, slightly altering its original appearance.
- The site includes a Renaissance chapel with a remarkable semicircular portico, whose floor tiles bear the likeness of an armed figure.
- The manufacturing buildings of the factory vanished during the 18th century, except those along the Orbiel river, which were converted to farm use.
