What the French Ministry of Culture records
Au 13e siècle, à cet emplacement, fut fondée la bastide de Bretenoux. Ce château fut aggrandi et restauré jusqu'en 1782. Un incendie le ravagea en 1851. Le plan en triangle comporte un corps de place cantonné à ses sommets de tours rondes et flanqué, sur chacun de ses longs pans, par une tour en fer à cheval. Il est protégé par une enceinte qui l'enveloppe totalement. A l'intérieur de la place, les courtines sont flanquées de bâtiments implantés autour d'une cour d'honneur triangulaire. Datant du 13e siècle, le donjon carré se dresse à l'angle sud-est. Le bâtiment de l'Auditoire, considéré comme étant le donjon du castrum existant en 1050, est adossé à la courtine sud. La chapelle du 15e siècle fait suite à ce bâtiment. Au 17e siècle, le château est percé de fenêtres à meneaux et les corps de logis sud et est sont doublés sur leur longueur.
