Perched on a basalt outcrop above Espalion, the château de Calmont d'Olt shows off its medieval ruins high over the Lot valley. The site was occupied as early as the 9th century, but the castle seen today was built between the 11th and 14th centuries, with an early keep later surrounded by a wall reinforced with eight towers. The visit path leads up to the keep's terrace, which looks out over the town, the valley and the surrounding plateaus.
