Château de Lordat stands in Lordat (Ariège), in the Occitanie region of France. The building is listed as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 11th century, 15th century). Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Set on a limestone outcrop at 965 metres above sea level, Lordat castle overlooks the upper Ariège valley through its imposing ruins. First recorded in 970, it was once one of the largest feudal fortresses of the county of Foix, sheltering Cathars in the 13th century before being partly dismantled on Henri IV's orders. The remains of three concentric walls, a keep and residential buildings still convey the scale of this medieval stronghold.

What to know

Reaching the site involves an uphill walk to the rocky outcrop, so a basic level of fitness is needed.
The monument, listed as a historic building since 1923, is essentially visited as open-air ruins.
Summer events, including falconry displays, are held on site.
Dry weather is preferable for the visit, as the ground is rocky and can be slippery.
Since the site reopened in 2016 after consolidation works, some masonry remains fragile and parts of the route may be restricted.
