Château de la Tranchade stands in Garat (Charente), in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region of France. The building is listed as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: fourth quarter of the 14th century, 17th century). Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
Set on a rocky spur above the Anguienne valley, the château de la Tranchade once guarded the southeastern approach to Angoulême. Its square keep, raised at the end of the 14th century by Aymard de Pressac, still dominates the courtyard, flanked by two wings added in the 16th and 17th centuries by the Nesmond and then Normand de La Tranchade families. The moat, carved into the rock to a depth of eight metres, is now crossed by a stone bridge that replaced the original drawbridge.
