Angoulême's town hall stands on the site of the former counts' castle, in the upper town. The current building, designed in the 19th century by architect Paul Abadie, blends medieval inspiration with Renaissance and classical touches, and is marked by a belfry that towers over the whole. Two remnants of the medieval castle survive within it, the Lusignan keep and the Valois tower, both listed as historic monuments. Visitors approach it through a flower-planted square, close to the Desaix rampart walk.
