What the French Ministry of Culture records

Ce château appartient à une série de places fortifiées élevées par le roi Edouard Ier pour défendre le nord de l'Agenais contre le Périgord et le Quercy. Il fut construit peu avant 1289 sur un site d'éperon selon une conception archaïque de la défense qui ne tint pas compte des innovations contemporaines, tant anglaises que françaises. Après une brève occupation française il fut remis en état au début du 14e siècle mais dut être reconquis en 1348 par Edouard III et resta sous contrôle anglais jusqu'à sa prise définitive par les Français en 1432. Ce château, remanié aux 15e et 16e siècles, a conservé l'essentiel de ses éléments médiévaux. Côté est, un fossé d'une vingtaine de mètres a été creusé dans la roche. Un mur de défense ferme au nord ce fossé et se prolonge jusqu'au château.
