Standing some fifty metres above the Gélise valley, the château de Poudenas has watched over the edge of the Landes forest and the old bridge crossing the river since the Middle Ages. Built on older foundations, it combines a stout 15th-century tower and 16th-century mullioned windows with a 17th-century remodelling that added balustraded terraces, inner-courtyard galleries and a façade recalling an Italian villa. Visitors can also see a straight-flight stone staircase, reception-room fireplaces and an entrance porch with 18th-century pillars.
