In Villandraut, the imposing ruins of a fortified palace recall the ambition of a Gascon pope turned builder. Begun in 1305 by Bertrand de Got, newly elected as Pope Clement V, the complex combines defensive architecture - corner towers, moats, a gated entrance - with a seigneurial residence designed for comfort and display. Despite its ruined state, the layout remains legible, with traces of the great hall, antechambers and former chapel still visible.
