The château of Nérac, in Lot-et-Garonne, retains only one wing of what was once a large quadrangular building begun in the late 15th century by the Albret family. Its low-arched gallery and capitals carved with human and animal figures reflect building work attributed to Charles II d'Albret and continued by his heirs. Marguerite of Navarre, Jeanne d'Albret and the young Henri of Navarre, later Henri IV, all lived here before the Wars of Religion and then the Revolution led to the destruction of the rest of the building. Now the Château-musée Henri IV, it is visited on two levels: the first floor holds a permanent exhibition on Henri IV and the Albret family, and the ground floor is devoted to Renaissance living. A trail of hands-on activities is designed for children and families, and a scent trail of some twenty Renaissance fragrances brings the period to life.
