In Chadurie, in the Charente department, the Puygâty manor house retains the outline of a small rural seigneury dating back to the 15th century, under Louis XI. Visitors can make out a mix of periods: a spiral staircase tower, medieval mullioned windows, and a 17th-century gatehouse and outbuildings, all enclosed within walls once marked by corner towers, of which only one remains. The site lies along the former route of the Roman road linking Saintes and Périgueux and is best appreciated from the outside.
