To make a day of it

Château de Mareuil stands in Mareuil en Périgord (Dordogne), in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region of France. The building is listed as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 16th century). Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Once the seat of one of the four baronies of Périgord, the Château de Mareuil stands beside the Belle river at the edge of the village bearing its name. Rebuilt in the 15th century in flamboyant Gothic style after its destruction during the Hundred Years' War, it retains its square keep, its chapel and a fortified entrance with round towers and a defensive ramp. Lived in since 1963 by the descendants of Marshal Lannes, the Dukes of Montebello, it houses their family collection, including pieces devoted to Napoleon I and the First Empire.
