In the Dordogne, Puyguilhem castle displays Renaissance architecture reminiscent of the châteaux of the Loire Valley, combined with Gothic remnants visible in the polygonal stair turret and some chimney bases. Built from 1513 onward by Mondot de La Marthonie, a high magistrate close to François I, it was designed as a secondary residence intended for hunting, which explains why it remained modest in size. Left to decay for many years, it underwent a twenty year restoration after being expropriated in 1938. The visit takes in the main building, the towers and the grounds, where a dovecote still stands.
