Near Nontron, in the Périgord vert, the château de Beauvais occupies a hilltop position above a tight valley facing the village of Lussas. Its two machicolated round towers frame a main building raised mostly during the latter half of the 16th century, although the estate's origins go back to a noble dwelling mentioned in 1450, then tied to farmland owned by a Templar commandery. Traces of this past survive in a dovecote and an old well sunk almost fifty metres into the rock. Still privately owned today, the château can be glimpsed from the surrounding wooded valley.
