Overlooking the Bandiat valley, Nontron castle stands in the Périgord Vert on a site fortified since the early Middle Ages, of which only vaulted cellars remain. The building seen today dates from the 18th century, built for a president of the Bordeaux Parliament on the foundations of the earlier stronghold. Its matching façades, with a pilastered central projection and a carved pediment, frame an interior staircase leading to rooms arranged in enfilade, including a library with surviving panelling. The ground floor now houses a centre devoted to craft trades.
