In Pauillac, château Lafite Rothschild takes its name from a vineyard estate whose reputation dates back to the 14th century, well before the Duke of Richelieu brought its wine to the attention of Versailles. The present building, dating from the 18th century, passed in 1868 into the hands of Baron James de Rothschild, whose family still owns it today. Inside, three centuries of decoration coexist, from the Louis XIV baluster staircase to the Napoleon III style salons, while vaulted cellars stretch beneath the estate, linked by galleries.
