To make a day of it

Château de Montaigne stands in Saint-Michel-de-Montaigne (Dordogne), in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region of France. The building is listed as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 16th century, 17th century). Adult admission costs 9.5 EUR. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

In the Dordogne, the château de Montaigne preserves the memory of philosopher Michel de Montaigne, born on this site where he wrote his Essays. A fire in 1885 destroyed the original residence, rebuilt the following year in a style blending neo-Gothic and neo-Renaissance influences, but the so called Library tower survived the blaze and still holds the writer's bedroom and study. Visitors can see the upper room where the mottoes Montaigne had painted on the oak beams remain, along with a chapel where he had his children baptised.
