The château de Pitray stands in Gardegan-et-Tourtirac, in the Castillon area of Gironde, on the site of a fifteenth century feudal manor. The building seen today dates from the Second Empire, rebuilt around 1870 by Bordeaux architect Alphonse Blanquière in a neo-gothic style influenced by Viollet-le-Duc. Around the main house, a chapel, outbuildings, a round dovecote and stables form a coherent ensemble, extended by a large landscaped park planted with century-old oaks and cedars, designed by Bordeaux nurseryman Jean Escarpit. The estate, still occupied by descendants of the family, maintains a winegrowing activity.
