Perched on a rocky spur above the Risle valley, the remains of this 11th-century stronghold recall one of Normandy's great feudal families, the Montforts, one of whom joined William the Conqueror at Hastings. The site, covering several hectares, still bears the marks of a siege led by King Henry I in 1122 and of a deliberate demolition by English forces in the early 13th century. Visitors come for the ruin itself, restored by volunteer teams, and for the view over the town and river below.
