The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 14th century, 15th century). Admission is free. Perched on a rocky spur above the Alleuze valley, this ruined stronghold still shows its square plan flanked by four round towers, characteristic of 14th-century fortresses. Never a royal residence, it functioned as a forward post guarding Saint-Flour and housed only a garrison. Destroyed and rebuilt in the early 15th century, it has kept its ruined appearance, deliberately left unrestored. Its isolated outline, overlooking the Grandval reservoir, has appeared as a backdrop in several films, including La Grande Vadrouille.
