The Château de Val stands on a peninsula of the Bort-les-Orgues lake in the Cantal region, its six turrets crowned with machicolations rising above the water. Built from the 14th century onward on earlier foundations, it narrowly escaped being submerged when the dam was constructed in 1946. Visitors can see the fortified main building, a 15th-century chapel and outbuildings altered in the 18th century, all set in a landscape where the lake has replaced the former park.
