Château de Lavardin stands in Lavardin (Sarthe), in the Pays de la Loire region of France. The building is listed as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 12th century, 13th century, 14th century, 15th century). Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
Perched on a rocky spur above the Loir river, the château de Lavardin displays its ruins between Vendôme and Montoire. The site was first built in the 11th century by the early lords of Lavardin before becoming the main stronghold of the counts of Vendôme. Visitors today find a rectangular keep, remains of curtain walls and towers, along with traces of an elaborate defensive system of ditches and double ramparts. The fortress withstood a siege by Richard the Lionheart in 1188 before being dismantled on the orders of Henri IV at the end of the 16th century.
