Standing at the heart of the village of Montmirail in the Sarthe, this castle occupies the site of a former feudal motte dating back to the 11th-12th centuries. Its vaulted rooms belong to the late 14th-15th century rebuilding, an octagonal tower was added in the early 16th century, and the panelled reception rooms were fitted out in the 18th century. The site is remembered for the 1169 meeting between King Louis VII, Henry II Plantagenet and Thomas Becket, and later became the residence of the Princess of Conti.
