Perched on a rocky ridge above Besançon, the ruins of the château de Montfaucon recall the power of a lordly family that shaped the county of Burgundy throughout the Middle Ages. First built of wood in the 11th century and rebuilt in stone at the end of the 13th, the complex combined a hexagonal keep, defensive towers and a fortified village whose three successive enclosures can still be traced. Abandoned after the wars of the 17th century, the site has been under restoration by the local commune since the 1980s.
