To make a day of it

Château d'Arguel stands in Fontain (Doubs), in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region of France. No visits are on record for this building.

The château d'Arguel is a ruined medieval stronghold standing on a rocky ridge above the Doubs valley, near the village of Arguel in the commune of Fontain. Built from the 11th century onward, it was burned down in 1336, rebuilt in the 15th century, then demolished on the orders of Louis XIV in 1668. What remains today are scattered traces: the base of a surrounding wall and a few openings of ground-floor rooms.

What to know

  • These are open-air ruins, with no restored building or developed visitor path.
  • Reaching the site involves a sloped path up to the rocky ridge, so suitable footwear is needed.
  • The visit is short, limited to viewing the remains of the enclosure wall and a few ground-floor room openings.
  • The site offers a view over the Doubs valley, of interest for walkers as much as for history.
  • There are no set opening hours or admission fees, as the site is an open-air listed landscape.
